hello!

so for those who do not read my incessant, bordering on obsessive-psychotic tweets,
Bernard's birthday just passed!

but before i blog about that i would like you to listen to some very awesome songs.
that i love,
and listen to on loop day in and day out.

first up is this awesome song "MIAMI 2 IBIZA".

it's waaay awesome okay.
it's by swedish house mafia (like what?!).
so bernard recently found out about SHM.
and told me about it.
i mean i've heard of them and tinie tempah (who is the awesome rapping guy) but i've never really cared much about them.
UNTIL NOW.

like,
HOW MUCH OF A GENIUS MUST YOU BE TO COME UP WITH LYRICS LIKE

"She said she loves my songs, she bought my MP3
And so I put her number in my Bold BB
I got a black BM, she got a white TT
She wanna see what's hiding in my CK briefs
I tell her, wear suspenders and some PVC
And then I'll film it all up on my JVC"

i don't care if you think it's trashy.
IT'S TRULY GENIUS.

so the next song i'm into these days is "TURN ME ON"

it's by my favourite french man david guetta featuring vocals by nicki minaj.
i don't really know what the song is about,
but it's very catchy and nicki minaj does this rap and the only line i can remember is
"I WANT YOU TO FATHER MY YOUNG".
what a refreshing way to ask for someone's hand in marriage okay.
way better than,
"do you want to buy a HDB flat with me?"

AND!
my last favourite song is by my favourite rapper in the world.

wild ones by flo rida.
if you do not like trashy hip hop you might like this because SIA is in it.
i do not know how to pronounce SIA (is it "seah" or "see-uhh" or "S.I.A."?) but her voice is pretty awesome.
i would also talk about titanium by david guetta and SIA but i feel that it is not trashy enough and i will have nothing but wholesome stuff to say about it.
and i am not very good at saying wholesome stuff.

FRIVOLITY FTW!

anyway!
so it was bernard's birthday last saturday and they lucky boy with the stomach bigger than jupiter had spent quite a good time filling it up with good food!

on friday evening we (thad, james, cheryl, bernard and i) headed to Valentino's.
or, to use the atas name " Ristorante Da Valentino'.
the food was truly awesome.

this is bread.
that you dip in some pesto sauce.
i know it may sound silly but this is the MOST FANTASTIC BREAD AND PESTO EVER.
i think i ate 5 strips of bread at least.

it has like this salty crust.
i like salty things.
except sweat.
don't like sweat.

so we started with some appetisers!

\

beef carpaccio!
we were all speculating how they made it.
if it was raw or if they did something to it.
luckily,
my tv junkie of a boyfriend knows all about atas food and how to cook them.
(theoretically).
so beef carpaccio, as bernard informed us, is thinly sliced beef "cooked" in lemon juice.
it's the acid in the juice that "cooks" the beef.

this was heaven!
melted cow cheese in parma ham!
by far my favourite dish in Valentinos :)
chees was soft and gooey and the ham was crispy and OMG SO GOOD.
pls everyone,
go to Valentino's and order this.

and we also go a pizza!
spicy beef with truffle oil.
okay this one i didn't really like because i don't eat spicy food.
cannot take mcdonald's curry sauce.
much to the despair of balachan guzzling bernard.
so i spent more time downing water rather than eating the pizza,
but according to the rest it was really good!

then came our mains!

clockwise from top left: bernard's tenderloin with italian carrots (DON'T THEY LOOK CUTE?), my seafood pasta linguine, cheryl's squid ink fettuccine with crab meat, cow cheese in parma ham because i like it very much and wanted to put it here, thad's risotto with (truffles?) and james' boring and predicatable but yummy cabonara.

bernard's dish was awesome!
seriously have never seen such cute carrots in my life.
his steak was very tender and came with a blue cheese dip that wasn't too strong.
just very flavourful!

and my seafood pasta was truly TO DIE FOR.
i was so happy with it.
i don't eat shellfish (except for scallops) and this linguine came with mussels (i think? i cannot identify shell fish well).
so i distributed my shell fish around the table.
each person received TWO SHELL FISH from me.
pretty generous eh?
and i also insisted that everyone try my squid.
IT WAS THE BEST SQUID EVER.
not chewy but very springy and fresh.
i do not know how to explain the degree of freshness of the seafood.
and the linguine was very flavourful.
i do not review food.
so my food reviewing vocab is limited.
but,
this aglio olio linguine had like,
IDK,
IS THERE SOME SPECIAL SAUCE?
I AM SO PUZZLED AS TO HOW LINGUINE CAN TASTE SO NICE.

halfway through i got very full (i suspect it is due to the bread i gobbled down coupled with the copious amounts of water that i took to deal with the spiciness of the pizza).
so i had this brilliant idea to swap plates with cheryl, who was full from her creamy pasta.

AND WE FINISHED EACH OTHERS PORTIONS.
this is about the most genius idea for people who cannot finish their own food.
i figure we were able to finish each other's food because your stomach resets itself after your tongue comes into contact with a different taste.
i got an A for A level bio.
so it is highly likely that i am correct.
however, you may correct me if you got an A for A level bio and then went on to study the human anatomy in uni.

so this is the cake that we got bernard for his birthday and cheryl for her very belated birthday!

it was a good cake.
not just any old regular chocolate cake,
but a chocolate rum and raisin cake.
and as all of you know,
EVERYTHING TASTES BETTER WITH ALCOHOL.

and this is us before we drove off to starbucks at one rochester.
which is a 2 minute walk from my house.
i love one rochester.

the next day!
we went for brunch at Hediard.
which is my favourite place to go for brunch.

it's this little french cafe near tanglin mall which serves very good food.
it's quite quaint!
you see the salt and pepper even comes in tiny saucers with little spoons!

so we had soup!
lobster bisque!
they only serve it every first week of the month so i guess we were really lucky that bernard's birthday didn't fall in the middle of the month or we wouldn't have gotten the chance to try it!

and we had a basket of pastries.
the croissants are to die for.
BEST CROISSANTS EVERRRRR.
also the pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant).
VERY GOOD.
GO AND EAT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

also this is bernard's winning face.

for context on the winning face please watch this 23 second video of jeremy clarkson.
HILARIOUS.

and this was our brunch!

bernard's eggs benedict,

and my eggs norwegian.

and then because we woke up for this brunch,
we were super tired and went home to nap instead of going to watch hunger games before dinner.
some people (read: me) are not used to waking up before 2 on a saturday.
granted i woke up at 12:30 BUT STILL.
ugh.
HAHAHAHA.

so we had dinner at morton's steakhouse in oriental hotel.
DINNER WAS SOOO GOOD.
(expnsive, but good.)
let me elaborate (i will begin with the awesome food).

started dinner with this ginormous bread roll which bernard insisted on taking a photo with.

ginormous right?
it's still the same roll that they served 2 years ago but i think i am more impressed with its size this time around,
possibly because i didn't have to share it with 3 other people.

our appetiser!
crab cake!

i must emphasize that this is really,
a crab cake.
meaning crab meat,
which is moulded to a shape of a cake.
not some fried batter thing stuffed with questionable content.
(like old chang kee - no way that is real crab meat.)

the crab cake at morton's was really more like a crab that you didn't have to shell.
AWESOME.

then came our main course!

bernard got the porterhouse steak.

not impressed?
i got the fillet mignon and this is how my steak looked beside his.

the steaks were really good and juicy and bernard insisted on tucking his napkin to his collar in case the juice splattered onto this CK shirt.

we also got a giant potato to accompany the steak.
this is half of the giant potato.

you know how they bring the sour cream, butter and bacon bits to you?
the have these little buckets and they shovel it onto your potato.
LIKE A BOSS OKAY.

and this is bernard with his finished steak.
very proud of him.

he also finished half of my baked potato and half of my steak.
no one ever tells him to think of the starving kids in africa.
(Y).

so the food was really awesome and SO WAS THE SERVICE.
omg the service.
was like.
THE BEST.
EVER.

okay so the staff (her name was denise and she is very cool and nice) was like offering to take photos for us.
which is very nice so like we didn't have to keep asking her and bothering her you know?

so this is us with the appetiser.

and this is us with the main course.
CAN YOU SEE HOW MUCH BIGGER BERNARD'S STEAK IS?!!!
hahahaha.

also you may notice that we were initially sitting at a table and we shifted to a booth later on.
we requested to be shifted to a booth like in the middle of the meal and the manager came to APOLOGISE for how long it was taking them to shift us (10 minutes. and we asked while people were still eating).

and this is us with dessert.
complimentary as it was his birthday.

you may also notice a little bright patch on the table.
YOU SEE THIS CUTE THING THEY GAVE US.

and then denise took our photo with the restaurant camera.
and reappeared with this.

LIKE TRULY WTF RIGHT?!!!
omg i was so impressed okay.
like truly,
impressed.

and so i tweeted it and then...

ALL THE WAY FROM CALIFORNIA.
LIKE THIS IS THE DEFINITION OF CUSTOMER SERVICE/INTERACTION/CARE/COMMUNICATION OKAY.

and this is us with our waitresses denise and farrah.
so awkward we are like standing in the middle.
anyway morton's is a fantastic place and pls go there to eat steak.
it's quite pricey, but really worth it.
and the staff are really great and nice to talk to and joke with.
very happy that bernard had a great time there on his birthday.
:)

okay what a long blog post this was.
i shall now go and do other frivolous stuff online.

LATER!
❤ jac.
